Francis S. Gabreski was a Polish-American aviator and World War II flying ace who later became a brigadier general in the United States Air Force. He was born on January 28, 1919, in Oil City, Pennsylvania, and grew up in New York state. Gabreski entered military service in 1940, joining the United States Army Air Corps.

During World War II, Gabreski flew combat missions in Europe as a fighter pilot, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters. He scored 28 aerial victories, making him one of the top American flying aces of the war.

After the war, Gabreski continued to serve in the Air Force, becoming a test pilot and later commanding fighter squadrons. He retired in 1967, having achieved the rank of brigadier general.

In addition to his military service, Gabreski was active in public service and charity work. He served as a safety consultant for the airline industry and was involved in the development of air traffic control systems. He also supported numerous charities, including organizations that helped children and fellow veterans.

Gabreski died on January 31, 2002, at the age of 83. He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
